STATUS: SOLVED

On 09/11/15 at 10:55am Officer Derrick Wallace was working off duty at the Speedway located at 716 N Broadway.  Frequently, businesses that experience high nuisance type crimes employ officers off duty to assist with calls for service.

Officer Wallace was alerted by a store employee that a subject had just stolen two cartons of cigarettes and fled the store.  Officer Wallace pursued the suspect on foot to Dakota St but lost sight of him.  Just then he heard someone yell “Go, go, go!” He looked up and saw an older model red four door Nissan Sentra pull out from the side of the roadway with the shoplifting suspect in the backseat.   The car lunged forward, the officer drew his side arm, and the car stopped.  The shoplifting suspect began to exit the car and Officer Wallace approached the side of the vehicle.  The driver then suddenly took off again and struck Officer Wallace.  He was spun around and the impact knocked the gun from his hand.  He rolled down the side of the car and fell to the ground.  Upon regaining his composure, he discovered his foot was broken.  Unfortunately, he will require surgery.
